PierPASS Names Top Technology Firm to Develop Information Systems for Off-Peak Gates

Program to Operate Night and Weekend Gates Set to Launch June 1

Long Beach - PierPASS, a program designed to shift significant amounts of cargo movement at Southern California ports to off-peak hours, has retained Affiliated Computer Services, Inc (ACS) to develop the complex information systems that will be essential to the program's overall success.

ACS, with headquarters in Dallas and more than 43,000 employees throughout the world, is a leading provider of diversified business process and information technology to commercial and government clients worldwide. The firm will be responsible for developing computer software that will track more than 13 million TEUs of cargo containers that move through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The overall complexity and the time-consuming challenge involved in developing this system has resulted in the launch date of PierPASS to be moved to June 1, 2005. "As much as the terminal operators would like to open extended hour gates tomorrow, it is more important that we have the right systems in place to make the program successful from the start," said Bruce Wargo, the new General Manager of PierPASS.

After an initial round of bidding, terminal operators who developed the PierPass program redefined the bidding process to achieve significant cost reductions and installation timing improvements that will be reflected in the program's overall success.

ACS will develop computer software designed to communicate with systems in all 12 terminals at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and keep track of when containers move through terminal gates and who owns or is responsible for the cargo.
